Introduce yourself to Black Atlass’ Tumblr, Facebook, Soundcloud and Twitter—it doesn’t reveal much. From the provided information, you can gather the artist is a 17-year-old producer/singer/songwriter of alternative/R&B/electronic music. Dig a bit deeper on the interwebs and you learn Black Atlass is Montreal native Alex Fleming, now 18, who currently resides in London, ON. With hypnotic vocals atop haunting riffs, the mystique behind his self-titled EP becomes riddled with even more questions: “dude was really only 17 when he produced this?” or “what the fuck am I doing with my life?” or…

Layton Wu: Why so mysterious?
Alex Fleming: Well I’m not really trying to create a mystery around myself, I mean, it wasn’t really something that I had planned, but, people just kind of see it that way because the information hasn’t been created, I guess—put out there as a formal bio or whatever. But that’s something we’re working on.

LW: Is there a specific theme you’re running with on this EP?
AF: Throughout the process of creating the EP I was envisioning myself within a very glamorous, very classic, high fashion European setting, and I wanted to emulate this imagined visual surrounding.  A huge part of it for me was creating this perfect visual world from which to draw inspiration, and from there creating a soundtrack that I felt would complete this scene.

LW: For you, what is the most fulfilling thing about producing?
AF: To see what you had envisioned basically come to fruition and be created exactly how you saw it in your head before it even existed. For people to pick up on that and become a fan of your work from the simplicity of a vision is something that’s really amazing to me.

LW: How would you describe your sound?
AF: Hard to describe.

LW: On your tumblr I saw a link for Last Night Collective. Can you tell us more about that?
AF: Last Night Collective is the name that was originally given to myself and my good friends, Odon and Bond, but it now additionally encompasses the creative work of a few select others.  It’s a tight knit creative team of really good friends, who share the same visions and aesthetic as well as the means to bring those visions to life through every creative aspect, whether it is music, photography, videos, design, etc.  We’ve been best friends since before any of this even started so we’re all very honest and open to each other’s views and opinions. As an artist, and even as a human being, it’s an amazing surrounding to have.

LW: Any summer plans?
AF: What I want to do over the summer is clean up my whole live aesthetic—to get it where it needs to be for the fall and next year. In the past, to try to bring what I have in the studio to the stage didn’t really work.  But I think people will like what I have in store for my live set-up in the future.
