Catch Up: Sam Catalfamo

Director Sam Catalfamo was first featured in our Winter 2010 Issue. Since then he has created a wide range of different films and we were intrigued to know more about each of them. When he invited us to this past Saturday’s exclusive screening, we we’re thrilled to have a chance to see each of his three shorts in their entirety. Unfortunately, life prevented us from doing so, but we made sure to ask Sam a few questions anyways; we didn’t want to let this opportunity to catch up slide by.

Since we interviewed you in Issue 6, you have obviously been a busy guy. Tell us about the past two years of your filmmaking life.

The last two years have been mostly painless. We have made several short films including Innocent Things & Public Swim and are slated for shooting a feature, Spring 2013.

How has your work grown from Teen Getaway to Innocent Things?

Teen Getaway was primarily pictorial and made on a limb. Innocent Things technically is about a feeling expressed through performance.

What compelled you to create Innocent Things? Is it based upon personal experiences as Teen Getaway was (as you described to us in Issue 6) or is it more fictional?

Innocent Things is based on idealized fiction. We approached the film as an intimate story between to very disturbed people.

Tell us about the process of making Innocent Things. What were some of the highlights/lowlights of the journey?

We tried a lot of different things with this movie because we had time and an adequate budget. That being said we ran into a lot of challenges that I can’t say were pleasant or care to articulate.

Your latest project, Creatures of the Cataract is another beautiful short that you made with Matt Tammaro in collaboration with Handsome Clothing (both are OTM alumni). How did this project come to life?

Handsome liked Public Swim and wanted to be apart something similar. We were given a small budget and license to the story and film. Since then, Matt and I are slated to create a film for HBC this winter.

What are you looking forward to creating next?

I am especially looking forward to shooting a film called MINOR about a runaway from cottage country.
