July Talk’s Paper Girl Video

Grab your best fire engine red lipstick and get ready to paint the town… well, red.

Local rock band July Talk released their music video to their latest single “Paper Girl” yesterday. Directed by Adam Crosby, the black-and-white video follows the band’s tradition of visualizing their work solely in grayscale.

The bluesy guitar riff is accompanied by minimalist verses sung by babyfaced singer Peter Dreimanis – who continues to surprise us with his hardened baritone vocals – and the angelic Leah Fay. Earlier this year when Amanda Cuda interviewed the two, Dreimanis admitted to enjoying making Fay the subject of their songs, whether she really was intended to be or not. The video for “Paper Girl” shows off Fay as the nominal character, as she struts in furs and sunnies while Dreimanis laments, “Well it must be hard to be a pretty girl,” getting more and more aggravated by her cloying flirtatiousness.

The stark, minimalist set allows for the band to move freely, with the moments of stillness allowing for Dreimanis and Fay to show off their individual performance styles.

As polar opposite – or, black-and-white – as they are, Dreimanis and Fay pull their band together to create a dynamic video.

July Talk’s first full-length, self-titled album hits shelves October 16.
